CINCINNATI -- There were other opportunities out there for Mike Zimmer. But he has an investment in the Bengals he wanted to see through to the end. Or at least through the next three seasons and the Bengals likewise feel they have the right man in the right spot to continue the progress they've made over the past two seasons.

Whatever he'll earn, he's worth it and more. Rey Maualuga's devotion speaks to that. He told Bengals.com tonight, "They did a good job re-signing him. I couldn't imagine being coached by any other defensive coordinator. I know it's only my first year but the passion he brings and how he teaches, it's beyond crazy. With his attitude and our defense's attitude, it’s a match."

Bengals Head Coach Marvin Lewis echoed those sentiments in a statement that reads in part, "I am very excited to have Mike back, coaching our players and directing our defensive staff."

For his part, Zimmer said “I love working with Marvin. He’s a great coach who does a terrific job and he has been like family to me through the ordeal our family has gone through. And I really respect the group of players we have.”

And that feeling is mutual, according to Bengals.com who got this comment from defensive tackle, Domata Peko. “Great news. We’ve got the main dude back. I can’t wait to get it going again.”

Now if they can only stabilize the offense. Carson Palmer had surgery on his left thumb Tuesday to repair ligament damage that required him to wear a protective glove most of the season. Hand specialist Dr. Peter Stern did the procedure which will require a three-month rehab.
