LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) – Louisville Democrats Denise Harper Angel and Tim Shaughnessy won re-election to the Kentucky Senate in two of the state's 40 contested legislative races Tuesday.
Democratic state Rep. Ron Crimm of Louisville also held on to his House seat. Vote counting remained under way in other legislative races across the state.
Republicans currently control the Senate 22-14-1, and Democrats lead the House 62-36. Of the contested legislative races, 11 are for Senate seats and 29 are for House seats. Many incumbents drew
no opposition.
Political scientist Joe Gershtenson of Eastern Kentucky University says he doesn't expect the legislative elections to
shift the balance of power in the state legislature.
Among races of interest, a former congressman who served time in federal prison is attempting a political comeback by running for a seat in the Kentucky Senate, where he began his political career 40 years ago.
Democrat Carroll Hubbard was running against Republican incumbent Ken Winters in a district that stretches from Paducah to Cadiz, encompassing seven western Kentucky counties.
