LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Democratic Rep. John Yarmuth and Anne Northup, a former congresswoman, clashed Monday night on the government rescue of the financial sector and a timetable for troop withdrawals in Iraq, and bickered over which will do more for the folks back home.
The deep philosophical divide between Yarmuth and Northup on key issues played out during an hourlong debate shown statewide on Kentucky Educational Television.
In some ways, it was a replay of two years ago, when Yarmuth upset the five-term congresswoman in the Louisville-area 3rd District.
On Monday night, Yarmuth again linked Northup's congressional career to President Bush.
"She advanced an agenda which basically has gotten us into much of the trouble we face now," Yarmuth said. "It has put us in severe financial difficulties."
As she did during her decade in Congress, Northup touted her ability to bring federal money back to the district.
