My family members, alive and deceased, have been Kentuckians for many generations. It's great to know that Kentuckians who love Bluegrass music can hear it almost anywhere in Kentucky as well as other states such as Ohio. However, there are Kentuckians such as myself, other family members, and neighbors who have listened to and appreciate Bluegrass music but cannot personally relate to it. It's a sad assumption that all Kentuckians are Bluegrass and Old Time Gospel music lovers. Even KET/PBS assumes that all Kentuckians breathe Bluegrass/OT Gospel music and have roots in Appalachia. Frankly, when I've attended events (Art Festivals, and such) that are inclusive of Bluegrass and OT Gospel concerts, jam sessions, etc. I, like other participating Kentuckians, are reminded how outcast many Kentuckians feel, especially those who find other kinds of music and recognition of other Kentucky areas more real as to who they are and where their roots lay. Most of my family members have and continue to live in northern Kentucky (again, for generations) and have found Bluegrass/OT Gospel foreign to who we are. I'm not giving up on the hope that one day there will be more images and experiences other than "Bluegrass" and "Appalachia" for ALL true blue Kentuckians to relate to and recognize themselves in those images and by those experiences as do those who relate to and see themselves as part of the Bluegrass and Appalachia heritage with all of its riches.
