The Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) has a wide-array of events planned for January, many of which are free. Come celebrate your Kentucky heritage at the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History in downtown Frankfort. 

  • Saturdays, 1-4 p.m., History Zone: “Fun and Games with the Lincoln Boys”

Imagine the childhoods of Abraham Lincoln and his sons as you “go fishing” and learn to play corner ball, marbles, hoop and stick, and other early 19th-century games. For children ages 5 to 10 and their families. Free.

  • Saturdays, 1:30 and 3:30 p.m., Museum Theatre: Diary of the Depression: A Day with Mary Ruth Dawson

Catch up on changing rural life as a chatty farm woman shares stories of Depression-era life. Free with museum admission.

  • Wednesdays, 2 p.m., Museum Theatre: Tobacco’s Tale: From Bed to Basket

Stop by the Hall of Governors to examine objects and documents that illustrate the lives and achievements of Kentucky governors. Free.

  • Wednesday, Jan. 7, noon, Brown Bag History: “Reading Lincoln: Historians and Their Books”

Join KHS historian Darrell Meadows and learn how to adopt a scholar’s perspective in choosing from the 140,000 books written on Lincoln since his assassination. Free.

  • Saturday, Jan. 10, 10:30-11:30 a.m. and 12:30-1:30 p.m., Family-History Workshop: “Dr. William

Sutton and Kentucky’s First Vital Statistics Law” and “Kentucky’s Fighting Men in the Civil War”

In the morning, Lisa Thompson of the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives will describe the history behind Kentucky's early attempts to record vital-statistics information. In the afternoon, Kentucky Ancestors editor Don Rightmyer will provide a detailed discussion about Kentucky men and their experiences while serving in the Civil War. Free.
