David Kisor wants to help kids gain self-confidence, know they can achieve anything and realize they are going to make a few mistakes--all through the act of song.
Kisor, the music director for Children Inc., a local daycare service, usually performs these songs for his students but recently, he took the songs outside the walls of the daycare--way outside.
Alongside a partnership with Bridge to Cross, Kisor recently traveled to the South African country of Mamelodi in hopes of bringing music and spreading hope to the people there.
The songs are a part of an outside venture of Childrens Inc., called Growing Sound, which produces music based on recent research that is designed to build social and emotional skills in young children.
Jordan Huizenga, marketing and multimedia for Childrens Inc., said this partnership between Childrens Inc. and Bridge to Cross just made sense.
"We (had) an easy opportunity here at Northern Kentucky to spread messages," he said. "(Childrens Inc.) really wanted to spread those messages abroad ... We really wanted to have a solid partnership to kids that needed it."
According to Huizenga, the main focus of Bridge to Cross is four aspects: music, arts, education and sports. They were interested in bringing Kisor along for the trip to Mamelodi because of his background in music.
For example, Huizenga said, one of the organizers heard Kisor’s song “One World,” and knew Kisor would be an asset for the trip.
He said he has been Kisor’s songs work wonders with the students at Childrens Inc., so he knew the songs would have an impact on the people in Mamelodi.
“We always have positive reactions from (the songs),” he said. “Our teachers tell us they us the songs and sing ‘I can do it’ … Through the song they are motivated.”
Instead of just donating money, Huizenga thinks that music is a better outlet since everyone is connected through music.
“It does not matter your age or race … Music speaks to all of us,” he said. “It is a positive way to deliver messages.”
