Science class is taking on a new twist for some Kentucky students Wednesday as a live surgery comes into the classroom via teleconferencing technology.

Students from participating high schools will go to Gateway Community College in Park Hills at 8 a.m. to watch a surgery being performed live by Dr. Scott Roth at the University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital.

Roth's surgery is expected to take 60 minutes during which the students will be addressed by the surgeon and will be able to see and hear all that he is doing.

Roth will perform a minimally invasive, or endoscopic surgery, using an endoscope (a lighted tube with a magnifying camera, inserted through small incisions). This type of surgery now accounts for a significant percentage of all operations, ranging from gall bladder surgery to heart bypasses.

Participating high schools are Notre Dame Academy, St. Henry District High School, Boone County High School, Campbell County High School, Calvary Christian High School, Grant County High School and Simon Kenton High School.

The UK Area Health Education Center (AHEC) and Kentucky TeleCare (telemedicine program), in collaboration with regional AHEC offices, schools and community colleges, are presenting this learning opportunity.
