The Bank of Kentucky Observatory at Thomas More College (TMC) will host this month's Evening of Observation on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. with a lecture from Associate Professor of Physics at TMC Joe Christensen followed by an observing session.

The plot of the new movie, "Angels & Demons," has an apparent plot to destroy the Vatican by using a small amount of antimatter. According to the storyline, the antimatter container was stolen from the European particle physics laboratory, CERN, after a well-meaning scientist collected the antimatter from experiments using the new Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This lecture will discuss what antimatter is, its creation in particle accelerators, and its limited potential as an energy source. A secondary topic will take participants into the physics at CERN and the LHC.

The evening will begin with a brief talk in the Science Lecture Hall about what will be going on in the skies that evening, followed by an opportunity to view it at the Observatory. The lecture will be designed to be understandable whether or not you are familiar with the storyline of the book or the movie. There will be time for questions at the end of the lecture.

This event is free and open to the public. Thomas More faculty and students will assist visitors in using the telescopes. No reservation required.
