The Northern Kentucky Health Department and Grant’s Lick Elementary School in Alexandria are working together to help local families better prepare for disasters such as pandemic flu, tornados, winter storms and power outages.

A disaster preparedness open house is scheduled for 6:30-8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 28, at Grant’s Lick Elementary, 944 W. Clay Ridge Road, Alexandria, Ky.

The open house will feature interactive activities for all ages and is open to families with children at Grant’s Lick and other members of the southern Campbell County community. Attendees will move through the school to various rooms focusing on a different type of disaster or aspect of disaster preparedness. Each topic will include interactive games/activities and educational information.

Health Department staff will lead the activities, working with fourth and fifth grade students from Grant’s Lick who will serve as tour guides and instructors for specific topics.

Representatives from the Medical Reserve Corps, emergency management, fire, and search and rescue will offer additional resources in support of community disaster preparedness.

"Becoming informed about potential disasters that could threaten our area is the first step to being prepared," said Steven R. Katkowsky, M.D., District Director of Health. "Schools are a great resource for sharing information, and we are fortunate to partner with Grant’s Lick Elementary students and staff to help raise awareness within the southern Campbell County community."

The open house is part of a year-long collaboration between the Health Department and Grant’s Lick Elementary through the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce’s B.E.S.T. (Business Education Success Teams) program.

"Our school and community have felt the impact of several weather-related disasters in recent months," said Amy Razor, Principal at Grant’s Lick Elementary. "The partnership with the Health Department presented us with a wonderful opportunity to educate our students about planning for disasters, and then allow the students to share their knowledge with their families and neighbors."
