HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Ten students from Highlands High School recently attended an Engineering Workshop for female and minority students at Northern Kentucky University. The students attended sessions on robotics, CAD programming, rapid prototyping, machining and welding.
The Engineering Technology Department at Northern Kentucky University holds a yearly workshop to introduce students to careers in engineering, and this year the workshop was designed to target female and minority students.
Contacted by Professor Seyed Allameh, assistant professor of Engineering Technology at NKU, Ed Long, teacher of gifted/talented and the robotics team coach at HHS, was asked to invite female and minority students to participate in the workshop.
After participating in the workshop, HHS senior Lindsey Steller stated, "I walked away with a new found interest for engineering!"
Freshman Ben Streeter said, "The workshop was very beneficial and exposed me to the different types of engineering."
"The students were surprised at the many fields of engineering that will require future engineers," said Long. "In the next ten years, there will be a need for over two million engineers in USA companies alone."
