FORT THOMAS, Ky. – Two high school students decided that it was time to do more for breat cancer awareness this October.
While participating in the Making Strides Against Cancer walk on Oct. 11, Highlands High School seniors Brooke Schutte and Madison Fennell decided to continue their involvement by striking out on their own and raising more funds to donate to breast cancer research.
"We’ve been involved in the walk for the past 3-4 years and wanted to do more," said Schutte.
After gaining approval from Principal Brian Robinson, Fennell and Brooke decided to sell pink ribbon cancer awareness socks at the school.
Backed by their parents, they purchased 130 pairs of socks and are selling them for $3 – making a $2 profit for each pair sold. The socks are being sold before and after school through Friday.
As October is breast cancer awareness month, the Highlands football game against Scott on Oct. 23, has been designated as a "pink out" where everyone is encouraged to wear pink to show support.
"We saw several people wearing the pink ribbon socks at the walk and thought they would be a great item to sell as a fundraiser," said Fennell.
The girls will continue their mission by having a table set up at the game to sell any remaining socks as well as collect donations. Profits from sock sales and all monies collected will be donated to a yet-to-be-determined local breast cancer research organization.
