CARROLLTON, Ky. Approximately 25 Korean War veterans will receive long-overdue awards during special ceremonies at the Carrollton American Legion Post 41.

The 2 p.m. event on Saturday, Nov. 7, honoring members of the military from this area is open to the general public.

Keynote speaker will be Carroll County native Thomas L. Preston, executive director of the Kentucky Office of Homeland Security and a senior adviser to Gov. Steve Beshear.

Honors will be bestowed to the veterans representing different branches by Brig. Gen. John W. Heltzel, director of the Kentucky Division of Emergency Management and Deputy Commander of the Kentucky National Guard.

The North Korean Army invaded South Korea on June 25, 1950, and the conflict lasted 37 months before a cease fire was agreed upon. No permanent settlement ever has been reached.
