FORT THOMAS, Ky. – Highlands Middle School art teacher, Collin Shadwell, arranged for his eighth grade art students to learn photography first-hand by bringing in professional photographers Don Moore and James Brenson from Kamera Art.
As part of his two-week careers unit in the arts, Shadwell combined his two one-hour morning classes into one two-hour class block to give his students a detailed look into professional photography.
Presenting to students in the high school’s black box theatre as well as outside on the school grounds, the photographers reviewed the basics, teaching students how to use camera settings and demonstrating techniques for both indoor and outdoor photography including lighting, composition and arrangement.
Students then had the opportunity to work with the professional digital cameras themselves. Some of the students’ photographs will be displayed on Shadwell’s teacher web page and each student will select one of his/her digital photographs to be printed to take home.
"The photographers who came in taught us about the most important aspects of photography and by doing so helped us improve," said student Kayla Crawford.
Shadwell explained that bringing in professional photographers allowed students to see a broader view of the arts and also see that there are fun as well as lucrative careers in the arts.
