The Kenton Conservancy will host a spring hike at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Wolsing Trails Preserve in Independence.

The aim of the hike is to increase public awareness of the non-profit conservation land trust's mission of preserving Kenton County’s natural areas.

The group will meet at the Public Works building at Lincoln Ridge Park (formerly Banklick Woods Park) on Independence Station Road at 9 a.m. and carpool to the nearby site. Hiking boots are recommended.

Kenton County is experiencing rapid growth, and with growth and development comes the need to balance that development with green space and preservation of natural areas, according to conservancy board member Michael Bennett.

“People want more green space and to lessen their impact on the environment, but we can’t simply depend on someone else to take care of it,” Bennett said in a release issued by the organization.  “Our goal is to work with the community and developers to strike that balance between nature and growth. We need to increase public awareness of the options available to individual land owners who do not wish for their land to be developed, but economically feel it is their only option.”
