Erlanger, Ky. – Students from
Kenton County Schools show their patriotism with drawings for the ninth annual calendar aimed at answering the question “Why I Love America.”
The contest is open each fall to all
Kenton County students grades K-12. This year more than 3,000 entries were submitted.
A panel comprised of Kenton County Sheriff’s Office
Capt. Todd Massey, Senior Services of Northern Kentucky
Vice President Donna Oehler, Kenton County
Chief of Police Ed Butler, Kenton County
District Court Judge Ken Easterling and Kenton County
Attorney Garry Edmondson then selected which pieces would be included in the 2010 calendar. Twenty-six pieces were chosen -- one winner and one honorable mention from each grade.
“This contest is an excellent way for students to artistically express their feelings by producing creative and original pieces of art. This annual calendar contest allows students the opportunity to reflect on our government and its history as well as modern day practices,” said Edmondson.
The winners were recognized for their artwork at an award ceremony Tuesday, Dec. 15 at Kenton County Library branch in Erlanger.
A $200 U.S. Savings Bond was awarded to winning students, and a $50 U.S. Savings Bond was awarded to honorable mentions. A $50 check was awarded to the teacher of each winning student. Additionally, both the winning student and his or her teacher will be pictured in the calendar.
“We strive to keep patriotism high in our youth, and especially the community at large during these difficult times. The theme of the calendar reminds us of the incredible freedom and opportunities the United States bestows upon us,” said Edmondson.
All proceeds from the sale of the calendar will benefit the
Senior Services of Northern Kentucky. Those interested in purchasing a calendar can call Susan Straw at the
