Bill Would Make Sex Abuse By Jailers A Felony

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Jail officials who have sexual conduct with inmates could face jail time, under a proposal that could be considered when the Kentucky General Assembly meets in January.

The Glasgow Daily Times reports state Sen. Julie Denton, a Louisville Republican, has filed legislation before next year's legislative session that would make it a felony for jailers or deputy jailers to have sexual contact with the inmates they oversee. Denton says people in positions of trust and authority should face tough penalties for such actions.

Currently, the charge would be a misdemeanor.

A similar measure cleared the Senate last year, but stalled in the House Denton said.
