PADUCAH, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky officials have hired contractors to burn debris from the January ice storm.
There is so much deadfall in the 12 westernmost counties of the state that controlled burns will be used to dispose of it.
Jim LeFevre, chief district engineer of the Department of Highways District 1 told The Paducah Sun officials would rather the trees and limbs be used as fuel, but there is too much of it.
LeFevre said the state has to remove it from land which owners leased as space to pile the debris as it was cleared from roads.
Some of the debris was ground for fuel in power plants and paper mills, but much of it contained too much dirt and other materials to be recycled.
Controlled burns of debris have begun in McCracken and Lyon counties.
