More than 36,000 Kentuckians may be eligible for 13 weeks of additional unemployment benefits.

Kentuckians who filed their unemployment insurance claim on or after May 7, 2006 and have exhausted those benefits and are currently unemployed may be eligible and will be notified by mail.

The weekly benefit amount for the extended benefits will be the same as the person received for regular unemployment compensation during the original 26-week benefits period.

"The extended benefits brings a lot of money into the state. If everyone who is eligible receives the benefits, it will bring $9.9 million into Kentucky's economy," said Tony Dename, director of the Kentucky Division of Unemployment Insurance.

Potential candidates can apply for the extended benefits online at www.kewes.ky.gov or through the call center at (859) 547-3362 from July 9, 2008 until March 22, 2009.
