LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Former U.S. Rep. Ron Lewis is spending money from his campaign funds, even though he's not facing an election.
The Lexington Herald-Leader reports that the campaign spent more than $60,000 last year on expenses ranging from restaurant meals and hotels to cell phones and photography. Lewis tells the newspaper he spent some his remaining campaign funds for expenses that were necessary to represent Kentucky's 2nd District in Congress.
Lewis opted not to seek another congressional term in last year's election, and had $447,429 in his campaign account at the time. As of Sept. 30, his account had about $20,000 remaining.
Lewis says most of his money has gone toward donor refunds, charities or to other Republican candidates.
