CYNTHIANA, Ky. (AP) - A Kentucky National Guardsman, who recently returned from military service in Afghanistan, has been killed in a traffic crash near Cynthiana, where he resided.

The Harrison County Sheriff's Department said 24-year-old Daniel Westfall's vehicle ran off U.S. 27 early Sunday, then flipped end-over-end three or four times.

The Lexington Herald-Leader quoted investigating Deputy Steve McCauley saying Westfall served in a National Guard engineering company that returned from Afghanistan just three months ago. The soldiers had been honored with a parade in Cynthiana on May 16.

McCauley called Westfall's death "a sad end" and said it has devastated the community.
