ASHLAND, Ky. (AP) — Some farmers in eastern Kentucky say their crops are being consumed in the fields by huge flocks of birds.
Danny Blevins of Lawrence County told The Independent in Ashland that the skies were black with blackbirds, starlings and grackles as the birds descended on his cornfield in such numbers "the field would just shake."
Several farmers in Lawrence and Boyd counties in the East Fork Valley watershed said they can't scare away the ravenous flocks, so they're harvesting whatever they can.
Blevins said he fired more than 300 shotgun shells, trying to scare away the birds. On Sunday afternoon, he left the field and let the birds have it.
