Race Is On Between Harvesters, River

Last Update: 11/02 3:40 pm

HICKMAN, Ky. (AP) — Many western Kentucky farmers are trying to harvest soybeans before their fields flood.

WYVY-FM in Union City, Tenn., reported dozens of farmers worked together over the weekend, combining (COM'-by-ning) beans in an area known as the Upper Bottom, north of Hickman.

The Mississippi River is expected to reach flood stage of 40 feet on Monday and crest at 44 feet on Thursday.

The threat faces farmers in northwestern Tennessee and they, too, are racing to gather crops.

Many are selling their beans at lower prices than usual because they have too much moisture in them.
