Kentucky Labor Cabinet Deputy Secretary Mark Brown Thursday presented Western Kentucky Energy’s D. B. Wilson Station the Governor’s Safety and Health Award for exceeding 268,663 working hours without a lost-time injury or illness.

The award was presented to the electric power plant and its 100 full time employees, who are members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 1701.

“Western Kentucky Energy has established the right culture for safety at its D.B. Wilson plant, as demonstrated by the number of safety awards the company has received,” said Deputy Secretary Brown.

“To go over a quarter of a million hours without a lost-time injury or illness is remarkable. It is a testament to what dedicated employers and employees can accomplish when they work toward a common goal of workplace safety and health.”

The company earned its first Governor’s Safety and Health Award in 2002, and this marks the fifth award presented to the Wilson plant. The company’s next goal for the Centertown station is to exceed 500,000 working hours without a lost-time injury, which could be reached in October of 2009.

Located just across the Green River in Ohio County between Island and Centertown, Kentucky, the D.B. Wilson plant began commercial operation in 1986. The facility has one coal-fired unit that generates 420 megawatts of electrical power.

Western Kentucky Energy is a subsidiary of E.ON U.S., Kentucky’s primary energy services provider. E.ON U.S.’s other main Kentucky-based subsidiaries are Louisville Gas and Electric and Kentucky Utilities.
