Ohio Wind Storm Losses Total More Than $1B

Last Update: 3/12 5:21 pm
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- New insurance industry estimates show Ohioans have suffered well over $1 billion in property losses from a pair of severe windstorms.

The Ohio Insurance Institute reported Thursday that winds from Hurricane Ike last Sept. 14 resulted in more than $1.14 billion in insured losses, making it the state's largest natural disaster of recent times.

And, the estimate does not even include local government cleanup costs that so far total $36 million.

The institute also has released a preliminary report on the storm with gusts of up to 76 mph that blew through Ohio one month ago.

Insurers say fallen trees and limbs caused about $89 million in damage, including broken windows and siding and roofing ripped from homes.
