Kids Walk Toward A Brighter Future

Students and teachers from Holy Family Catholic School will lace up their walking shoes this Saturday to raise money for a new computer lab.

Their Walk-a-thon is part of the multitude of activities celebrating the Greater Cincinnati Global Youth Service Day.

The Walk-a-thon will begin at 8 a.m. at Saint Henry High School in Erlanger and last until 1:30 p.m. Students from kindergarten to 8th grade, alongside their teachers, will walk a pre-measured, safe path through the neighborhood.

"The 5th and 6th graders will be using their math skills to measure the path," said
Erica Jones, math and science teacher for grades 5-8. It will be approximately three blocks, and after each lap participants will get a card punched to keep track of their distance.

Each participant has been asked to bring in a pledge of at least $5. Additional donations are welcome.

There will be a variety of activities and incentives to keep the morning interesting. Last year there were several themed laps. During one lap, younger students walked with their "buddy," an older student who had acted as a mentor during the school year. Students also picked up trash during one lap, and enjoyed ice pops during another. Different snacks will also be passed out after a certain number of laps are completed.

Parents and other volunteers can help in a variety of ways. Some will punch cards and pass out snacks. Others will stand at the corners of the blocks and make sure everyone stays on the route. Food and monetary donations will be gladly accepted.
