On a single day in the month of April, youth throughout the Tri-State will give back to their communities one service project at a time.
“Any person can give back,” said Jordan Huizenga, Children’s Inc. coordinator for Global Youth Service Day.
During the weekend of April 25-26, hundreds of youngsters will come together for a purpose.
Nearly 500-600 youth from Northern Kentucky and Greater Cincinnati are expected to turn out for Saturday’s Global Youth Service Day. The youth will be from age 5 to 25 and from elementary school students up to college students.
“At Children, Inc. we believe that empowering youth to make a difference in their community is essential to their development into responsible and engaged adults. [We] work with elementary and high schools to initiate Service Learning programs where children learn through service,” said Huizenga.
He called volunteerism a wonderful way to strengthen our community while teaching valuable skills and life lessons. And one way to do just that is through GYSD.
During GYSD, youth around the world organize community service projects to address local needs. Youth participate in GYSD to address the needs of their local communities through service, to be recognized for their contributions and to be a part of a global youth service movement.
“Service and service learning is continuous,” said Huizenga.
To cap off the weekend a service symposium will be held at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. The symposium will be for youth and teachers and stress how to serve their community and give back.
The hope is that it will teach youth how they can make a difference every day, not just on one special day.
