Individuals, corporations, community groups and others are invited to wear their Derby hats on the job in support of the fight against cancer.
The Hat Parade to Fight Cancer will benefit the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN).
Those who wear their hats on Thursday, April 30, are asked to make a $10 contribution to ACS CAN, the advocacy affiliate of the American Cancer Society. ACS CAN is building a grassroots movement to make cancer a national legislative priority. Participants will receive a sticker to let others know they support ACS CAN, and will become members of the organization.
"Each day, more people in Kentucky are being diagnosed with cancer, but lawmakers have the power to help eradicate this disease by making it a national priority," said Jamie Webb an ACS CAN volunteer and Hat Parade to Fight Cancer participant.
"Being part of ACS CAN’s grassroots movement gives me the opportunity to work with my state and federal lawmakers in support of ACS CAN’s legislative agenda. After all, cancer is as much a public policy issue as it is a medical and scientific concern."
Among the issues ACS CAN and its volunteers are working on include:
improving access to adequate health care for all, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulation of tobacco products, more funding for cancer research, increased access to colon cancer screenings and treatment, and ensuring all women have access to mammograms.
To participate in the Hat Parade to Fight Cancer, visit the American Cancer Society office in Lexington, Ky., located at 1504 College Way, or call (800) ACS-2345.
