"I shot him. I didn't aim. I didn't mean it. I didn't plan it. All I knew I had to stop him," Cheryl McCafferty testified.

After the prosecution rested its case against Cheryl McCafferty Tuesday, the defense has put her on the witness stand.

McCafferty, who is accused of killing her husband Robert in June 2007, was called to the stand just before 1:30 p.m.

"He opened his eyes and he was raising his head," Cheryl said.

"I shot him. I didn't aim. I didn't mean it. I didn't plan it. All I knew I had to stop him," she added.

Cheryl's attorney asked her if she intended to shoot her husband when he woke up. She responded, "I was not going to let him get that gun."

A 10-minute recess was called around 2:30 p.m.

Tuesday morning testimony indicated the gun used to kill her husband may have been wrapped up in clothing when it was fired.

Cheryl showed no emotion as she was escorted into the Circuit Court room on the second floor of the courthouse Tuesday morning.

She potentially faces life in prison if convicted of murdering her husband, by shooting him to death at their Fort Thomas home on June 25, 2007.

Jurors heard from FBI forensic experts that bullet holes and chemical residue, also known as gunshot residue, were found in multiple places on a gray t-shirt and flannel pajama bottoms. The clothing was found in a hamper in the closet of the McCaffertys' master bedroom, where Robert was shot to death.

The clothing could indicate an attempt to quiet or silence the sound of the gun blast. The gunshot residue could also have come from Robert's previous use of the small Colt revolver.
