Now that Cheryl McCafferty has been convicted of first degree manslaughter, Newport jurors now have to consider an appropriate sentence.

Legal experts tell us the sentencing range for this type of conviction in Kentucky is 10 to 20 years in prison.

McCafferty jurors are back at the Campbell County Courthouse Tuesday morning, to hear arguments for what sentence Cheryl McCafferty should serve for killing her husband, Robert, in June of 2007.

It took less than four hours for the 12-person jury to reach a verdict, choosing first degree manslaughter over murder or other conviction options.

It capped off a two week long trial in Newport, that ended with the 44-year-old mother of two escorted from the courtroom, devoid of any emotion after hearing about her conviction.

It is possible that, along with lawyers, we may hear from members of Robert McCafferty's family during the sentencing processes.  Supporters of Cheryl McCafferty, who believe she was a chronically battered wife, may also speak on her behalf.

It is not yet clear how long it will take for the jury to start deliberating a possible sentence. Circuit Court Judge Julie Reinhardt Ward could consider testimony about alleged abuse by Robert McCafferty in mitigating any sentence recommended by the jury.

Even though we expect cameras and computer will continue to be banned from the courtroom, we'll provide you with minute-to-minute coverage here and later on 9News.
