As the Cheryl McCafferty murder trial resumes later Thursday morning in Newport, many are anxiously waiting to see who the defense will call next to the witness stand.
Cheryl McCafferty herself has already testified, as have her two teenage children. So, it's possible the defense may now call other relatives to talk about the McCafferty marriage in those final months before Robert McCafferty's death.
Cheryl McCafferty, a 44-year-old Fort Thomas mother of two and advertising executive, is charged with murder in the shooting death of her husband in June of 2007 at the couple's home.
On Wednesday, the defense presented expert witnesses who testified about evidence concerning whether Robert McCafferty was still laying on his pillow when he was shot.
Ross Gardner, a blood stain expert for the defense, says he believes Robert might have started to sit up when his wife shot him in the head.
However, the prosecution's own expert witness has previously testified that evidence shows Robert McCafferty had his head on his pillow, and was possibly sleeping, at the time of the shooting.
Defense attorneys contend that Cheryl McCafferty was verbally and physically abused by her husband, to the point of having a gun in her face the night before the shooting.
Also at issue Thursday is the question of how much expert witnesses are being paid for their testimony. The blood stain expert to the court was reportedly paid almost $3,000 a day for his investigation into the case and testimony.
