Cheryl McCafferty being escorted from the Campbell County courthouse after the verdict was announced.

After only three-and-a-half hours the jury in the Cheryl McCafferty murder trial reached a verdict Monday.

She will be sentenced Tuesday morning.

"You know I'm not sure I can feel good about any part of it," said Ron Dill a friend of the McCafferty's. "I lost two friends."

McCafferty showed little emotion as she walked out of the courtroom Monday evening.

The manslaughter charge carries with it a 10-20 year prison sentence.

"It was certainly a situation where there were choices to be made and bad choices were made, and I'm a firm believer that people should suffer the consequences of those choices," continued Dill.

Not everyone was pleased with the verdict.

Karen Berney, who says she was stricken from the jury pool because she has served as an advocate for battered women, told 9News she didn't think McCafferty could have left what she described as abuse by her husband Robert.

"She was afraid. She knew to be afraid," said Berney.

"She had 17 or 18 years to be afraid and she knew him and she knew his violence and she knew he meant it," said Berney.

With the sentencing hearing pending, both the prosecution and defense were not at liberty to comment Monday night.
