Free H1N1 Vaccinations For Expectant Mothers

Last Update: 11/04/2009 4:02 pm

CINCINNATI -- The Cincinnati Health Department has announced it will hold its second appointment-only H1N1 vaccination session for expectant mothers on Tuesday, November 10.

The session will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at 3101 Burnet Ave. Parking for this session is available at the building and is accessed from Martin Luther King Drive between Burnet Ave. and Highland St.

To register for this session, pregnant women should call (513)357-7499 and press option 5 where they will be asked to leave their name and phone number.

There is no charge for the immunization.

Regrettably, due to limited injectable vaccine supply, only the first 350 callers will be assigned an appointment time. Appointments are expected to fill up quickly. Expectant moms who wish to receive the vaccine are urged to call right away. Women should wear clothing that will allow exposure to the upper arm area to allow for vaccination.

“We are thrilled to see so many individuals interested in taking a step to improve their health and we urge your continued patience," said Noble Maseru, PhD, MPH, Cincinnati Health Commissioner. "Unfortunately at our last session we had far more demand from expectant moms than we had vaccine. As the injectable vaccine arrives we’ll continue our efforts to offer it to high priority groups as quickly as we can.”

The CHD is also offering H1N1 “nasal mist only” vaccine sessions on Thursday, November 5 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Elm Street Health Center at 1525 Elm St and Friday from 1 p.m. to 3:30 pm at the Millvale Health Centers at 2750 Beekman St. These are for healthy individuals ages 2-49 without underlying chronic medical conditions, who are considered high priority as defined by the Center for Disease Control. These include: healthcare workers and emergency medical service personnel, healthy children and young adults ages 2-24 years, and healthy adults up to age 49 who care for a child less than 6 months old. The complete Tier One list can be found at http://cdc.gov/h1n1flu/vaccination/acip.htm.

The CHD is continuing vaccine planning efforts so H1N1 vaccine can be distributed as quickly as possible as it arrives from the state and federal governments. When the vaccine is in adequate supply, it will be offered to the general public vaccine in the evening at the CHD's 5 Community Health Centers.

The H1N1 vaccine does not protect against seasonal flu. The Cincinnati Health Department recommends that individuals receive both the seasonal and the H1N1 flu vaccines in accordance with existing CDC recommendations.
