Fifty-three University of Kentucky student-athletes earned a spot on the 2009 Southeastern Conference Spring Honor Roll.
The women’s track team led all teams with 17 selections followed men’s track with eight, softball with seven, men’s golf with six, men’s tennis with four, women’s tennis with three and women’s golf with two selections.
The 2009 SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll is based on grades from 2008, Spring, Summer and Fall terms. In order to be eligible a student-athlete must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher for either the preceding academic year or have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 of higher at the nominating institution. Student-athletes eligible for the Honor Roll include those receiving an athletics scholarship, recipients of an athletics award and non-schlarship student-athletes who have been on a varsity team for two seasons.
Making the honor roll for Kentucky men’s golf team are seniors Ben Fuqua and Andy Winings, who both major in communication, junior finance student Derek Oldham, junior communication student Alex Volpenhein, sophomores Chase Carpenter and James Kania, who both major in pre-finance.
Kania won the 2009 Braemer Invitational held at the Lexington Country Club June 24. Kania finished the tournament with six strokes under par and shot a 66 to claim the tournament title.
“Stretches of golf don’t come around like that very often,” Kania said. “But it sure is nice when they do. It was great to break through and get a win after the Philly-Am. Hopefully my solid play this ummer will carry through to the fall season.”
Kania, a native of Haverford, Pa., finished second in the 109th Philadelphia Amateur Championship earlier in June.
