Ron Dawn could set a precedent this week by becoming the first local high school basketball coach to win boys’ and girls’ regional titles in the Touchstone Energy All “A” Classic small-school playoffs.
While he was head coach of the Newport Central Catholic boys’ basketball team, Dawn won four regional titles and one state championship in the All “A” Classic.
Now he’s in charge of the NewCath girls’ team that’s considered one of the leading contenders in this week’s 9th Region All “A” Classic that begins Monday at Dayton High School.
NewCath won the All “A” Classic girls’ regional title the last two years under former head coach Christie McDonald, who resigned last spring. Dawn filled the vacant position and the Thoroughbreds are off to an 8-5 start in his first season as a girls’ head coach.
Ludlow (11-2) has the best record in the 10-team regional field. If the Panthers win the tournament, they will become the first public school team to take the title since Newport did it in 2000.
Local teams will also compete in the 10th Region All “A” Classic at Brossart and the 8th Region All “A” Classic at Owen County this week. The regional winners will advance to the Touchstone Energy All “A” Classic state tournament that begins Jan. 28 at Eastern Kentucky University.
