The Holy Cross Indians used a balanced offensive attack to defeat Louisville Holy Cross, 26-10, in high school football on Saturday afternoon at Holmes High School.

The Indians had 330 yards of total offense with 212 yards passing and 118 yards rushing. Two of their touchdowns came on rushing plays and two came on pass plays.

Senior running back Brayson Smith scored both rushing touchdowns, including a 55-yard breakaway run in the second quarter.

On the Indians’ next offensive possession, sophomore wide receiver Eric Walker caught a 14-yard halfback option pass from senior Andy Roenker that gave their team a 14-0 halftime lead.

Louisville Holy Cross scored late in the third quarter to make it 14-7, but the Indians responded with a 63-yard drive that was capped off by Smith’s 10-yard run into the end zone.

The Indians’ final TD was a 14-yard pass from junior quarterback Jerry Arlinghaus to senior wide receiver Jordan Harris with 7:03 left in the fourth quarter.

A late field goal by Louisville Holy Cross made the final score 26-10.

Smith was the game’s leading rusher with 77 yards on seven carries. Arlinghaus completed seven of 16 passes for 118 yards and senior quarterback Markel Walker completed seven of 10 passes for 80 yards.

It was an important win for Indians, who snapped a three-game losing streak before starting Class 2A district play. Their next three games are against district rivals Newport Central Catholic, Lloyd and Newport.
