NewCath, Notre Dame Advance In State Volleyball Tournament

  Newport Central Catholic (20-9) had to score 31 points to win its first game on Friday, but the Thoroughbreds downed Apollo (31-11), 33-31, 25-22 in a first-round state tournament game at Northern Kentucky University on Friday.

 Junior outside hitter Sarah Suedkamp and sophomore middle hitter Jamie Kohls recorded back-to-back kills on the final two points to lift the Thoroughbreds in game one. Sophomore setter Taylor Snyder dished for assists on both.

 In game two, NewCath ran off six straight points after falling behind, 8-7, and the Thoroughbreds never relinquished that lead. Suedkamp had three aces during that rally.

 Sophomore outside hitter Liz Gruenschlager led NewCath with 14 kills and five digs, and Snyder dished for 34 assists and added eight digs.

 Junior outside hitter Bridget Johnson racked up 11 kills, and sophomore setter Haley Root finished with 23 assists in the losing effort for Apollo.

 NewCath will face Oldham County (24-6) in a state quarterfinal at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.

 
NOTRE DAME ALSO MOVING ON – Sophomore outside hitter Emily Schmahl, sophomore outside hitter Shelby Reid and senior middle hitter Jaimie Wulfeck had six kills each as Notre Dame (31-8) defeated Green County (28-12), 25-5, 25-16 on Friday.

 Senior setter Brooke Jones added 27 assists for the Pandas, who will play Lexington Paul Dunbar (35-9) in a state quarterfinal match at 10:15 a.m. on Saturday.

 Senior outside hitter Randa Murphy led Green County with six kills.

 The first game was tied, 1-1 when Notre Dame ran off 14 straight points to take a commanding lead. Sophomore outside hitter Lindsay Hartmann had all four of her service aces of the match during that stretch.

 In game two, Green County was within three points, 12-9, but the Pandas ran off 10 of 11 points, with Jones recorded five assists in that span.
