NewCath Rallies To Sink Oldham In State Volleyball Quarters

 Sophomore outside hitter Liz Gruenschlager recorded 13 kills and sophomore middle hitter Maggie O’Day added 11 as Newport Central Catholic (21-9) took down Oldham County (24-7), 23-25, 25-23, 25-18 in a state quarterfinal on Saturday.

 Sophomore setter Taylor Snyder dished for 33 assists and chipped in a team-high eight digs.

 NewCath dropped game one, and fell behind, 16-13 in the second game, but the Thoroughbreds ran off six straight points, with Snyder serving for three aces and Gruenschlager notching two of her kills during that run.

 Oldham County led most of game three, but NewCath tied the score, 18-18 then scored the final seven points to win the match. Snyder had two kills during that run, including one on the final point.

 The Thoroughbreds will play the Southwestern-Louisville Sacred Heart winner today at 3:30 p.m. in a state semifinal. The winner will play in the final tonight at 7:30 p.m.
