Newport Central Catholic scored 27 straight points after surrendering a touchdown on its second defensive play from scrimmage as NewCath beat Louisville Christian Academy, 27-7, Friday at Newport in the Class 2A playoffs.

The win was offensive coordinator Dave Schneider’s third in place of his father, Bob Schneider, the all-time leader in football wins in Kentucky who was hospitalized with blood clots a few weeks back.

Chris Kelly led the Thoroughbreds with 25 carries for 138 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Brady Hightchew followed with 23 carries for 118 yards and a touchdown.

Hightchew also completed four-of-five passes for 44 yards.

LCA was held to 183 yards of offense, with 66 of those coming on a touchdown run by Wes Osborne on the Centurions second play from scrimmage after Hightchew was intercepted in the end zone on the opening possession of the game.

NewCath will travel to play at Louisville DeSales in an effort to reach the state championship game for the fifth straight season.
