An empty wallet doesn't have to mean an empty stomach or a missed chance to get out of the house.
With the economic downturn, many may think luxuries like going out to eat are too strenuous on their wallets; however, hard times have encouraged many restaurants to deliver better deals than ever before, in an effort to keep customers coming in and their tummies full.
Here are 6 tips on how to go out to eat for less, without compromising quality:
- Go online for coupons. Signing up for email alerts from your favorite restaurants is a great way to their best deals delivered to you, says Tod Marks of Consumer Reports. Coupons for specific places can be found on sites such as KidsMealDeals.com or valpak.com.
- Watch what you drink when you go out. Alcohol, coffee and soft drinks can add extra charges to your meal. Sticking to water can save money and leave you feeling refreshed.
- Eat half, take home half. A to-go box allows a $20 meal to become two $10 meals.
- Get meals to go. Many restaurants let you call in your order for pickup, avoiding eating in the restaurant and the temptations that come with it. Taking your food to the park avoids paying the tip and the temptation of buying additional desserts and drinks, according to The Smarter Wallet blog.
- Set a budget before you go. The Smarter Wallet also suggests deciding how much you are willing to spend will help you decide where to eat and what to eat when you get there. Ask the waiter for the price of specials if he doesn't mention it. You don't want to be surprised when you get the check.
- Share the meal. Some restaurants have large portions, so share one entrée between two people to cut back on costs. Some places may charge a buck or two for an extra plate, but that's still cheaper than paying for two entrées, especially when neither person is able to finish their meal.
