Boating Accident In Grant County Kills Man

Last Update: 7/04/2009 12:22 am
A busy Friday afternoon quickly turned tragic at Williamstown Lake in Grant County.

Police say a man was water-skiing behind a boat when he fell into the water and was waiting for his friends to turn the boat around and pick him up.

That's when police say he was hit and killed by another boat.

Investigators say the other boat’s operator didn't see the man.

"Preliminary investigation shows it was just an accident. There's no sign of alcohol or drugs involved," said Officer David Osborne, of the Williamstown Police Department.

Investigators say the man's friends pulled him out of the water after he was struck by the boat and began CPR until emergency crews arrived, but it was too late.

Police are not releasing details on the man's injuries however they do want to warn everyone about the dangers of a busy lake.

"Being a holiday weekend, there is a lot of extra traffic on this lake and it is kind of a small lake,” said Osborne. “So, we do need to urge people to be cautious when they're on this lake."

Police have not released the victim's name or age.
