Condemned Ohio Killer Of 3 Says He's Innocent

Last Update: 6/30/2009 12:41 pm
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - An organization devoted to freeing innocent inmates has gone to bat for a condemned Ohio killer, sentenced to die for killing three people in Bucyrus in 1994.

It's a rare move for the Ohio Innocence Project, a group better known for using DNA evidence to challenge convictions of non-death penalty cases.

Project Director Mark Godsey says the case of Kevin Keith gave him enough concerns he felt the group should step in.

Prosecutors allege Keith opened fire on six people, killing three, to retaliate against an undercover police informant he blamed for his arrest on drug trafficking charges.

Keith's attorneys have identified an alternative suspect and say police presented false evidence at trial about a victim who identified Keith.
