Deficit Grows As Hamilton, Firefighters Negotiate

Last Update: 7/02 1:31 am
Talks continue between the union that represents the firefighters of Hamilton and the city's administration.

At issue is $1.8 million that the city says the firefighters need to give up in wages to keep the city afloat.

"It's critical that we reach some kind of agreement with the concessions," said Mayor Donald Ryan.

All of the other collective bargaining units represented in the city have made concessions to meet the projected $4.5 million shortfall for the next two years.

"That number, however, was based on the implementation of cuts beginning July 1. So, we've implemented everybody else's, so, every day we go where we don't implement that $4.5 million the deficit will grow," continued Ryan.

Eric Abney the president of IAFF Local 20 tells 9News that the firefighters are ready and willing to make the wage sacrifices, but want assurances that no fire houses will be closed.

The city's administration is reviewing that proposal currently.

Abney said, "I think the package is beneficial to both the city and the firefighters – and that it will provide a strong foundation for the city's future."

Time will tell if the city's administration agrees.
