You can search for sex offenders on a new national Web site. The U.S. Department of Justice has changed the look and domain name for its sex offender Web site and put in place a new domain name,
nsopw.comThe DOJ says the updated version has a new look, is more user-friendly and enhances search functions. It is the only government system that links to public, state, territory and tribal sex-offender registries within one national search site.
Assistant Attorney General Jeffrey Sedgwick says, “NSOPW provides the public with information to protect themselves, their families and their communities from coming into contact with registered sex offenders.”
The site will let users with a single query, search sex offender registries in up to 50 states, two U.S. territories and the District of Columbia. It will match results based on name, state, county, city or zip code. It will soon link to newly established sex offender registries, including certain Native American Tribes and additional U.S. territories.
The original site came on line the summer of 2005 as the National Sex Offender Public Registry. DOJ says it averages 2.3 million hits a day with 14,000 daily users.
