WESTCHESTER CO., N.Y. -- The first confirmed case of the swine flu in a dog has been reported this week.
Officials say a 13-year-old mixed breed dog contracted the virus.
He's being treated in an animal hospital.
Doctors say to look for symptoms in your pet like trouble breathing, sneezing, vomiting or a lack of energy, but that even if your pet is showing those symptoms, don't assume it is swine flu as it could be any number of pet illnesses.
"It doesn't seem like as of yet, this can replicate in the dog and go off and infect another dog or go and infect a human," Dr. Daniel Lauridia of the Murray Hill Pet Hospital said, "but we didn't think the swine flu would jump from human to dog and now that's happened."
Doctors say don't wait to get your pet checked out.
