When it was first announced that George Grande would be joining the Reds' Fox Sports telecast team, there was a bit of skepticism about a 'Big Time' play by play guy coming to little old Cincinnati. Many figured the former New York Yankees announcer was here for a cup of coffee and would be moving back to the 'Big Time' as soon as the right position came open.
I was personally reticent to engage George because of his national reputation. Some guys with his resume are pretty sold on themselves and look down on local TV types. But George Grande, to his everlasting credit defied all of the stereotypes.
He was personable, approachable and genuine in his dealings with everyone. In that regard, he reminded me a little bit of the late Jack Buck, who always offered a warm "How ya doin' young man" to anyone who offered a timid, awestruck glimpse in his direction.
It is hard to believe that George has been in the job for 17 seasons. That we were privileged to provide a summer home for the man who anchored the first ESPN Sports Center broadcast 30 years ago and is the Master of Ceremonies at the Baseball Hall of Fame inductions every summer.
But after 45 years on the job, he's decided he wants to spend more time with his family and won't fulfill the last year of his contract. Some broadcast entities might take a hard line and hold him to the terms of his commitment. Not in this case.
George Grande has been an incomparable ambassador not only for Fox Sports but for the game he's loved so long. And he has been blessed with the skill to convey that passion to millions of viewers over a distinguished 45 year career.
George will continue to dabble in TV and I will look forward to our paths crossing in the future. All the best to a real pro.
