Thousands of people had to repair their home in one way or another after last year's September wind storm. Some of those home owners were say they were taken advantage of by contractors who took money for repairs but never returned to work.

That is what happened to a family in Hebron. The Starnes say they gave a $1,700 down payment to a roofer but he never showed up to complete the work.

"Just wondering if the roof would leak soon," said Kathy Starnes." Which I'm really shocked that it hasn't."

About a year after the wind storm, Mr. Starnes fell ill. He and his wife Kathy used the rest of their insurance money for living expenses and to repair their car. It seemed as if their roof would never be fixed.

A few weeks ago, as Kathy was coming home, she notice one of her neighbor's roof was being repaired. Once she was home and settled, she answered a knock at her door from one of the contractors.

"One guy came over and asked me if he could give me an estimate on my roof," said Starnes.

The contractor was Dan Simpson of Better Homes Restoration. "I happened to be finishing up a project next door," he recalled, "I happened to notice how bad [of shape] that house was in, it was in terrible shape."

Simpson says his heart went out to the Starnes so he did something about it. "I thought these are some people that really need some help. So I went to different suppliers and got a generous donation from Lowes."

In all, Simpson collected over $10,000 worth of materials for the Starnes home. Not only would their roof be repaired, but they would also receive new gutters, window dressings, and other cosmetic touch-ups to improve the aesthetics of the home.

Kathy was in shock that a group of 10 men from three different contractors were working at her home Thursday morning.

"They said they wanted to fix up my home free of charge. You don't find that anymore," said Kathy.
