The latest hurricane to threaten the United States is expected to make landfall this weekend.
Hurricane Ike is expected to hit Texas on Saturday. That's why the parking lot at a Mason McDonald's is packed with ambulances and emergency crews.
Fifteen ambulances and more than 30 EMT's organized through FEMA gathered before the 14-hour trip to Louisiana where they will help victims of Hurricane Ike.
"Just the chance to be able to go down and help other people and be part of something this big is really neat," said Warren County medic Jeff Adams.
The crew's mission will include transferring patients from one hospital to another and emergency medical work.
The men and women say starting this trip on 9/11 is a once in a lifetime experience. "It's kind of special, really special leaving today and going down to help out other communities on this day," said Warren County medic Kevin Grathwoho.
The exact length of the trip is still unknown but it should be less than two weeks.
The men and women didn't find out about the trip until Wednesday afternoon. In less than 24 hours they were prepared to save lives.
All the crews were told they'll need to be self-sufficient for the first 72 hours, meaning food, water, and sleeping in the ambulances.
