Northern Kentucky leaders spent Tuesday afternoon learning about a new $20 million Kentucky National Guard Armory in Burlington, and how it will help their communities.
Just across the parking lot from the Boone County Sheriff's Office at the corner of Conrad Lane and Bullittsville Road is where the Kentucky National Guard plans to build the huge new armory.
But don't call it an "armory," the Kentucky National Guard says this will be a "state of the art" readiness center.
Kentucky National Guard leaders made a dramatic entrance Tuesday morning, landing by chopper on the grounds of the Boone County Sheriff's Office to meet with local officials.
Leaders arrived to brief Boone County and Northern Kentucky officials on the progress they've made in getting the land to build the new $20 million Readiness Center.
The National Guard says the new center will go a long way to helping it attract new Northern Kentucky members to its battalions. Kentucky National Guard Adjutant General Edward Tonini says, "This is one that is going to be significantly larger, almost three times larger than other Armories we have and are building in Kentucky. It will be able to house up to 400 guard members with 80,000 square feet of space. It will be state of the art, all the way."
Design plans aren't yet complete for the new center, so they displayed some of the drawings for three other Kentucky Guard Centers going up in the next year or two.
