LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- Officials in Louisville say a mechanical failure sent more than 10 million gallons of raw sewage into the Ohio River this week.
The Courier-Journal reports that the spill into the river was the result of a failure of one of the main sewer lines going into the Morris Forman Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The Metropolitan Sewer District says work was completed about 10:15 p.m. on Wednesday after several hours of repairs, and the spilling stopped around 1:20 a.m. on Thursday.
Brian Bingham, a senior engineer with MSD, says it's not likely that anyone was exposed to the spill because of the cool weather, and municipal drinking water intakes downriver are able to treat and disinfect the river water.
MSD officials say the agency could be hit with fines.
