Local Company Uses 'Magic Salt'

Last Update: 2/09 8:26 pm
CINCINNATI -- Local plowing company, We Do Snow, is using a special product called "Magic Salt" to help treat Tri-State roads.

Magic Salt is made from the by-products of gin and vodka and mixed with magnesium chloride.  The liquid mixture is sprayed on regular rock salt.  The sugars in the alcohol prevent the product from freezing, just like your favorite alcoholic beverage.

The product is environmentally friendly and works more effectively.  Steve Sahlfeld, the Sales Director for We Do Snow says, "What it allows you to do is to have working temperatures to 35 below zero. Which is about 50 degree more effective than traditional rock salt which stops at around 18 degrees."

Sahlfeld also says anyone can buy the product and use it, but it does cost more.  However, he says that the buyer would use less.  He also says that his plows use 50 percent less salt than they would with traditional salting methods.
